Plan Your Day Ashore

A Caribbean cruise usually means three to six port days, and each one is short. Your ship may tie up at a pier in the middle of town, anchor offshore and run tenders, or berth at a purpose-built cruise village miles from anything. Knowing which is which, and how far the reef, the ruins or the beach really is, decides whether you spend the day doing something or waiting for a taxi.

This guide groups the region’s busiest ports into three routes: the Western Caribbean and Mexico, the Eastern Caribbean and Bahamas, and the Southern Caribbean. Each port page explains where ships dock and lists bookable shore excursions you can compare by length, rating and type.

Caribbean Cruise Ports — FAQ

Should I book shore excursions before the cruise?

For popular outings such as Stingray City, the Pitons or cave tubing in Belize, booking ahead is wise because small-group tours fill up on busy ship days. Simple beach days and town walks can be arranged on arrival.

What is a tender port?

At a tender port the ship anchors offshore and small boats carry passengers to the pier. Grand Cayman and Belize City usually work this way. Allow extra time to get ashore in the morning and back aboard in the afternoon.

How do I make sure I get back to the ship on time?

Note the all-aboard time, which is earlier than the departure time, and keep your phone on ship time. Choose tours that end well before all-aboard, especially when the main sight is an hour or more from the pier.

Do I need a passport for Caribbean ports?

Requirements depend on your citizenship, your cruise line and where the voyage begins and ends. Check with your cruise line before you sail, and carry the documents they require on every port day.
